Great question. And from what we’ve seen over the last two decades is this: MOST of our clients find us after they’ve already been through a few different training programs. The missing link in all of them? Proper corrections for non-compliance. We see a lot of dogs being trained recall on food, but then that’s the extent of their training. Food is always the bribe, and trust us, there is always something more valuable than food out there (like deer, coyotes, and rabbits to chase.) Food is great for laying your foundation, but you eventually need to get off it and actually hold your dog accountable for what they know. That’s the *magic* to a reliable recall. I used to tell people not to worry about recall until they tackled some bigger issues with their dogs, but here’s what changed:
For years, I’ve suggested people DO NOT focus on off leash recall until they had more of their dog’s behavioral issues under control.
Off leash freedom is a privilege, and I am a firm believer not ALL dogs should be off leash. But here’s thing: what about dogs who have lots of land to live on, or huge back yards?
Here’s a scenario we see all the time: “my dog is reactive and has high prey drive. He chases animals and bolts out the door. I can’t even trust him to be outside in my own yard.”
These dogs still need recall in order to live their day to day life in their homes. Most people get dogs so they can at a minimum chase a ball in the back yard and roam around the property. But if your dog is chasing animals and giving you the middle finger every time you take the out to potty?
Probably not what you signed up for.
So instead of spending all your time focusing on perfect obedience inside, doing all your drills like down, place, etc. why not just start with recall from the get-go?
In fact, we actually recommend our clients DO these days. It’s a safety issue for the door dashers as well.
We are very protective of your time and energy. And we understand most owners don’t want or need to train every single obedience command out there-but recall? In our world it’s non-negotiable.
